India defeated Australia by three wickets on day 5 of the fourth and final Test at the Gabba in Brisbane on Tuesday to retain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Rishabh Pant hit an unbeaten 89 runs from 138 deliveries to see the visitors cross the finish line. His T20-type heroic shot consisted of nine fours and one six. The visitors got off to a slow start to the day, losing the ground to Rohit Sharma in the early stages. With the India vice-captain departing, Shubman Gill took matters into his own hands with an elegant 146-ball, 91-run knockout consisting of eight fours and two sixes. He was assisted by Cheteshwar Pujara, who played a typical Test cricket bat, facing 211 balls and scoring 56 runs. Pujara was heroic in his effort as he deftly countered multiple body and hand blows to fill the role of blade anchor that was vital to the team effort. Names like Ajinkya Rahane (24) and Washington Sundar (22) were key contributors to India's scoring. Pat Cummins was once again Australia's star bowler, recording four wickets. Veteran spinner Nathan Lyon took two wickets in his 100th Test match, but it was not enough to prevent defeat.Scorekeeper)
